Taylor Swift at the ACMS

While People Magazine creates a pretty spot-on recap of Sunday's American Country Music Awards, there are a few additional things that I find worth commenting on. What I am was most interested in is the speech that Andrea Swift (Taylor Swift's mother) gives when introducing her daughter to the stage. I am a huge Taylor Swift fan, don't get me wrong, but I really don't understand the reason for bringing in her mother to introduce her. Just last week, Taylor made the devastating announcement of her mother having cancer, but before this announcement, Andrea Swift has stayed mostly out of the spotlight. Now that the news is out, I just find it odd that her mother would make such a public appearance, to only flatter her own daughter. I'm not being insensitive or hating on Taylor- again, because I am a fan. But I really do not understand the purpose of Andrea's speech... was it to bring her into the spotlight again or was it to reflect on Taylor's accomplishments? I have a feeling that Andrea didn't ask to present Taylor, but that it was suggested to her. It is strange that we use serious things such as cancer to make our celebrities appear more approachable. While the speech was very touching, I believe it was only given in order to make Taylor Swift seem like the average young woman, which we all know isn't true. While I am a huge fan, I am definitely getting sick of her attempt to constantly be seen as the "down to earth" girl.

  1. I think I would have to disagree on some parts of this. I'm sort of an obsessive Taylor fan, and I feel like she is a fairly typical young woman. Of course she has fame, fandom, and money, but she is still quirky, cute, and finding her place in this world (song pun intended). More than using her mom's speech as a way to make her seem more average, though, I think the purpose could have been for Taylor to honor her mom, a way for her to show the world where she came from. It was almost like her ultimate way to tell her mom thanks for everything she has done. I don't know, that could just be my T Swift-loving bias speaking, who knows?

  2. It might have less to do with Taylor, and more to do with her mother. Taylor is paid a lot of attention, and with the news of her mother's illness, she may be trying to steer some of that fame in a productive direction towards awareness and treatment.

  3. HUGE TAYLOR FAN, and I am not ashamed to say it. Her lyrics are like crack, I catch myself singing them all the time. She made the list of top 100 influential people in the world, what is there not to like?
